10 Risk Factors of Burnout

A high-stress job isn’t always the cause of adrenal burn out. Anyone who feels overworked and constantly on the go is at risk of burning out. From the office worker who works long hours to the business owner who hasn’t had a holiday in years, to the stay at home mum who tends to kids, housework and ageing parents.

There are some individuals in certain occupations who are at higher risk than others when it comes to burnout, but your lifestyle and personality traits can also contribute. What you do in your downtime and how you look at the world can also cause overwhelming stress.

10 risk factors for burnout that you need to watch for:

  1. Taking on too many responsibilities at work or home life, without asking or getting help from others

  2. Not getting enough sleep

  3. All work and no play. You don’t take time out to relax and socialise with friends or family.

  4. Lack of close supportive relationships

  5. Working in a high pressure and chaotic environment

  6. Lack of recognition for good work whether it is at home or in the office

  7. Doing work that you find is mundane or boring

  8. High-achieving, Type A personality

  9. Perfectionistic tendencies; nothing is ever good enough whether it is at work or at home!

  10. Reluctant to delegate anything, you need to be in control!

I get it, as a mum, business owner and high achiever it is hard to let go of control or ask for help.

The mum guilt associated with wanting to take some time out to recharge can be very overwhelming at times. You feel exhausted but now the kids are in bed you finally get some time to do what you want, so you stay up binge-watching a tv show while eating chocolate. I get it and am totally guilty of all of these things.

However, whether you can relate to any of these 10 risk factors of burnout, or are already at breaking point, now is the time to take a step back, reassess and change direction.

Trying to push through the exhaustion and continue on the same path will only cause further physical and emotional damage.

By making small but sustainable changes to your diet, work and lifestyle you can help yourself overcome burnout and feel healthy and positive again.
