10 Ways To Relieve Stress Naturally

Stress has become an unavoidable part of life, but that doesn't mean you should ignore it. Too much-untreated stress can potentially cause some serious physical and mental health problems.

Relieving stress can be easier said than done sometimes. However there are some simple things we can do everyday to help relieve stress naturally.

10 Ways To Relieve Stress Naturally

Exercise

When it comes to exercise, it’s not all about weight management or increasing your fitness. Exercise can relieve stress as it releases endorphins which can improve your mood. It also can improve sleep quality and boost confidence. Yoga is a particularly good type of exercise to help relieve stress.

Journaling

Writing things down can be a way to handle stress. You could write down what’s stressing you out or focus on what you are grateful for.

Practising gratitude can help to relieve stress as you are focusing your thoughts on what’s positive in your life.

Spend Time With Family And Friends

Family and friendship networks can help support you through the stressful times and give you a sense of belonging and self-worth.

Men and women both benefit from friendships. Studies have found that spending time with friends helps with the stress response.

Have A Good Laugh

Have you seen those laughing groups in the park? Do you find the laughing infectious and you start to smile?

Laughing can help with relieving tension by relaxing your muscles. It also releases endorphins and lowers levels of stress hormones. Try and find the humour in everyday life and don’t sweat the small stuff to help relieve stress.

Say No More Often

I get sometimes things happen that you have no control over, however, you do have control over some stressors in your life. Take control, say no more often and only take on what you can handle to help relieve stress.

Prioritise

Prioritising what needs to be done can take away the stress and overwhelm. Get into the habit of prioritising what needs to be down and give yourself realistic time frames. Try and do one task at a time and complete it. Multitasking can be stresses in itself!

Get a Hug

A positive touch from hugging can help release oxytocin and reduce stress hormones, helping to relieve stress. Find a person and give them a hug!

Breath Deeper

Deep breathing can help to activate the relaxation response. It can be particularly helpful when you are trying to calm yourself down in a stressful situation. There are several types of deep breathing exercises, including diaphragmatic breathing, abdominal breathing and belly breathing. You’d be surprised at how much better you feel after a few good deep breaths.

Eat Well

When we are stressed and overwhelmed we often forget to eat well and reach for the fatty, sugary snack for a quick pick me up. Try and avoid these types of foods even though they may make you feel good for a short period of time. Opt for a fresh whole food diet with plenty of colour.

Listen To Music

Taking a break to listen (dance or even sing!) to some music can help relieve stress. If listening to the ocean or sounds of nature isn’t your thing, opt for some other type of music which helps calm you down as it has a positive effect on the brain and body.
